FRAME OF MIND from @melinapizanofrom one year ago: “There’s two sides to every story, especially when it comes to sports. I photograph behind the scenes and main event action for promoter, @matchroomboxing. On May 4, 2019 I covered the middleweight championship unification bout between our boxer, Daniel Jacobs, and Saul Alvarez. On this particular night I shot the main event from an auxiliary spot (second floor.) The fight resulted in a decision that went to the scorecards. The winner by unanimous decision: Saul Alvarez. Like any sports photographer my immediate shift went to the winner to capture the victory photo. That’s the shot every publication wants. The ring quickly filled with coaches, commission, authorities, and the TV crew. It often fills so much that sometimes it can become an obstruction for media that's ringside opposite the winner. One of the benefits of shooting boxing from an auxiliary spot is the ability to navigate through some of those obstructions. After photographing Alvarez my mental switch flipped to the other part of the story, a story that sometimes goes untold. I look over at our boxer @danieljacobsTKO and at that exact moment he kisses his son, Nate, on the cheek. It was a beautiful reminder of what truly matters most at the end of day. After the fight L.A. Times reporter Lance Pugmire wrote: Jacobs found his own supporter, son Nate, who told him in the ring, “Dad, you did a great job.” “That’s all that matters to me,” Jacobs said. 📷: @melinapizano #frameofmind
