California-based photographer Melina Pizano shoots boxing. “Before moving away for college I used to watch boxing matches with my brother. One night while watching a bout I noticed a photographer ringside. It was at that moment I decided to combine the two things that I love, sports and photography. I moved from the Midwest to California to attend @brooks.institute - I was out of my comfort zone and didn’t know anyone in the area but I was determined. I was fortunate to have Anacleto Rapping @arapping and @joegosen as my sports photography instructors. They gave me advice I’ll never forget: arrive to events early and stay late. In 2013 I became a photojournalist apprentice at The Orange County Register covering HS, college, and professional sports. After a group layoff at the paper I started photo assisting and freelancing. Through Sports Shooter I met Ed Mulholland @muls96 (HBO Boxing) who’s been a great mentor on the ins-and-outs of boxing photography. From a power punch to a knockdown, key moments in boxing can happen when you least expect it so you always have to be ready. Boxing may be a male-dominated sport and covered primarily by male photographers, but it’s never made me doubt where I want to be or what I love to do.
