OC Varsity – Team of the Week – Photo by Melina Pizano – 02/25/13

I recently started working at the Orange County Register as a sports photographer trainee. I'd like to share this particular piece because the topic of breast cancer awareness is a cause close to my heart after losing a loved one to it. During my first week as a sports photographer I was assigned to photograph a Westminster girls basketball game. This particular team stood out to me because they chose to create breast cancer awareness by having pink ribbons sewn onto their games jerseys in honor of anyone affected by breast cancer, including their head coach's wife, Harriet Katz, who is in remission. After discussing the importance of the coverage to the sports editor, the story was published in print and online as the O.C. Register's very first team of the week, honoring the team for their outstanding achievements on and off the court.
